Harmattan season had just began in Nigeria, but it seemed like it was worse in this particular part of Lagos. Jason was in a bar enjoying his drink quietly, staring at a supermarket across the street. He watched as people went in and out of it and sometimes tried to guess what they carried in the bag in their hands, just to get his mind off what he was thinking of. He waited a little, still staring at the supermarket when he noticed a slim figure walk into it. She was putting on sunglasses and fitted palazzo pants with a bright top that was contrary to her mood. She looked so down and stressed and for some reasons, he felt he had seen her face before. He decided to wait till she came out.
Anita felt so frustrated and depressed. To while away time, she decided to stop at the supermarket to get some groceries. She walked in and started shopping. It wasn't until about what she thought was a few minutes, that one of the attendants walked to her and asked if she couldn't find what she wanted, and offered to help. That was when she realized she hadn't bought anything in the last two hours that she's been in here.
"I'm so sorry, I got lost" she replied. The attendant was confused, but tried not to show it and this time without asking, he decided to help. Quickly, they were done. The attendant gave her this reassuring smile and she felt almost whole again. It was the first time someone had smiled at her in the last one month. She gave him a big thank you in return and left, while the boy continued staring at her.
She came outside and heard some creepy noise and turned to see what it was and found someone in the dark staring at her. She was startled and subconsciously, the bag she was carrying, fell from her hand, letting the things in the bag out.
Realizing what happened, Jason quickly came out and helped her picked the things that fell.
"I'm so sorry" he said as he picked the things, this time he was able to see her face, since she placed the sunglasses on her head. He was right, he had not only seen her before, but he knew her very well, though she had changed a lot.
"You must be Anita, if I'm not mistaking" he asked. She was shocked. "How do you know my name?" She asked.
"From Christ Model Primary school" he replied.
Anita knew he was either her classmate or a senior, but she couldn't recognize the face at all.
"Jason" he said, trying to help her out. After much description, she remembered him. He was her secret crush back then but he changed a lot. He was looking so masculine, tall, and smelled expensive. They exchanged numbers and promised to reach each other.
Immediately Jason got home, he called her to know if she was home safely. They talked for a long time on the phone till late midnight, without realizing. It seemed they were trying to catch up and it wasn't difficult at all. Anita was the happiest. She was happy she wasn't staying late alone with fear, like always. After the call, she slept so well thinking about Jason and how sweet he became, unlike back then when he was so quiet and seemed cold. She heard back then that he was a citizen of America by birth and also his mother was. They continued talking ever night, till it became an habit. They went out together, played and prayed together, till they were so fond of themselves. They couldn't stay a day without hearing from the other.
Within a month, they were already dating. The first night they spoke, he told her he was a therapist and could help her out of her head and back to the real world. Actually, he kept to his promise and helped her out. Sometimes he took her to places that he knew could help her feel more alive. This made her fall for him so quickly.
She told him everything about herself and her ex. Her problem had to do with her ex or better still fiancee. She caught him cheating two nights to her wedding and decided to call it off, but her parents thought differently. They wanted them to get married because he was very wealthy. She loved him but she couldn't stay in a marriage that has been built on immorality. She was too decent and innocent and deserved better. Since she couldn't stand seeing his face everyday, and he too couldn't, he decided to demote her to be a cleaner in the company, so she will have no choice than to leave. She knew he did everything because of his wealth and told herself that she will avoid rich men as much as she could.
Meanwhile, Jason had never been in a relationship before, and was really interested in this one. He didn't want to just try it out, he wanted to make it work. He wanted her to be his first and last girl in his life. However she told him she couldn't be with a man who already had wealth or fame or even both. He was scared of losing her and decided to keep a low profile.
Two months into the relationship, Anita met with her ex and he really looked like he was "fine" without her like he said, especially after seeing him with two different girls in the last three months of their separation. She wanted to just pass and act as though they had nothing before, but he thought otherwise. He noticed she came out from a very expensive car (which Anita never knew was really expensive) and wanted to know if she got it herself or she was clinging to a guy who gave her everything, maybe in exchange of her body. He knew even if she got a job so quickly, she couldn't buy such expensive car and he was really curious. He couldn't help his curiosity and asked her about it. She avoided the question. The car was Jason's. She only asked to use it because hers was short of fuel. She knew nothing about it or how he got it.
Later that day, she asked him about it and he didn't deny. He told her everything about himself.
He was from a very wealthy home, but he wanted to make his own wealth. He owned a company which his mother left in his name, before she passed away. But he knew nothing about running a company, so he told a close friend to help him hire people who will work in the company, while he paid him well. He got a chance to do what he wanted- therapy session. He built an office for himself a year after her came back from America to study.
Anita felt like an idiot. She felt jilted,it was like he didn't care about how she felt. He wasn't even bothered about how she will feel if she found out. He tried to explain his reason, but she left angrily.
Jason called her severally, but she didn't pick her calls. He went to her house but she refused to open the door for him. He sent messages, she read them but never replied. He thought he had lost her forever.
A week later, she came to his house. She told him she was sorry for overreacting and hope he accept her back. Jason thought he was dreaming and asked her to slap him. But instead of slapping him, she punched him so hard and pulled him to herself before giving him a big hug. They bonded even more, after the settlement.
Two weeks later, they started preparation for their wedding. Anita's parents were Yoruba, while Jason's father was Ibo, but still they related so well. At the end of the month, they had already fixed a date, so they decided to visit his company for the first time, together. Getting to the office, Anita was shocked. This was the same office she was working and this was where her ex was a manager!!! Jason was surprised too.
They got inside and found him in the secretary office, trying to force himself on her, while his office was empty. He didn't even notice their presence. To cut the long story short, he got fired for incompetence and rape, and went in for it. He begged Anita to forgive him and she did.
By December, they were already married. The following year she gave birth to her first child. It was a boy, a boy that looked so much like Jason. She felt so relieved seeing her baby and thank God for bringing perfection into her life again.
