Bright, multicoloured lights hang from the ceiling, casting a playful glow across the dance floor. Music filled the air, it's infectious beat pulsating through the speakers, urging people to move their bodies to the rhythm. "The DJ's voice could be heard, boys stop slacking and girls stop fronting! feel the beats.
As she sat down in the auditorium where the freshers night party is to take place, Zona's mind was a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts, a part of her was excited at the prospect of having fun with her new found friends, but another part of her questioned if she truly belongs to the party.
" A night before the party, she saw herself checking out multiple clothes, just not sure which was the best". But thanks to her friends who help redeemed her from her confusion by selecting a party gown for her.
"Now she is at the party determined to witness all of it". Her shy demeanour kept her on the outskirts of the dance floor observing others with a wistful smile. Unknowingly to her , a guy has been watching her.
'Hey lady, would you love to dance with me, stretching out his hands', amazed by his audacity and boldness, a part of her wanted to reject the offer, but with a shy smile she placed her hand in his, stepping forward.
The music was electrifying, she danced so well, which made her wondered where such talent had been all these years. "You are a good dancer" ,he complimented.
Thank you, she smiled.
As the clock struck midnight, Zona and her friends decided to head home, since they stayed off campus.
"Hey Zona" ,she was stunned, wondering who just called her among the mixed multitude. Oh! the guy she danced with, she just realized how strikingly handsome he is, with his sporty body. "Can I offer you guys a ride" he asked pointing toward a reddish brown Toyota Camry. Yes sure! her friends responded hurriedly. They've already hopped in, a part of her instinct keeps telling her not to enter. Zona! her friend yelled, she reluctantly entered.
Driving along lit roads under the soft glow of the moon. Their laughter filled the car as they recounted the highlights of the party.
On a dark stretch of the road, a sudden obstacle appeared, catching them off guard, Luke swerved, trying to avoid the hazard, but it was too late. The car skidded off the road and crashed into a nearby tree, shattering the silence of the night.
Her parents arrived at the hospital, the information about the accident reached them so swiftly. They cried their eyes out crying unto their God to save their daughter.
Zona blinked her eyes, they all she scurried towards her, but she stared at them blankly wondering who they were, and why they seemed so sorrowful about her, she felt so sorry for the woman crying beside her and wished to console her, but wondered who she was?
The neurologist spoke warmly to Zona's parents, "I understand that this is an overwhelming and challenging time for you both", but this is the time she needs you more.
He proceeded to explain, "she is suffering from Amnesia which are of different type, there are majorly three(3) types which are: ANTEROGRADE AMNESIA - with this type, a person has difficulty forming new
memories after the onset of the condition, while past memories may be intact, new information is not retained for long-term storage.
RETROGRADE AMNESIA- with this type the individual suffer the inability to remember events or information that occurred before the onset of the amnesia, in summary inability to remember the past.
TRANSIENT GLOBAL AMNESIA - during this period, individuals experience a significant impairment in forming new memories, but their older memories remain intact.
Your daughter is suffering from retrograde amnesia, in her case the injury impacted the medial temporal lobes and the hippocampus which are crucial for memory consolidation and retrieval.
Dr. Williams continued, "while Zona may struggle to remember events from her past its important to understand that her personality, emotions and other cognitive abilities remain intact. For example, one may forget when he or she bought a car, may not remember the colour, but still knows how to drive.
We will work together to help her navigate through this challenging time.
Engaging in conversation about her past, sharing photos and recounting stories can help trigger memories and promote recovery process.
" As time goes on, there is a possibility that Zona's memories may start to resurface. It's difficult to predict the extent of her recovery but with support, we can help her adapt to her new reality, "Dr.Williams explained.
She will also undergo cognitive rehabilitation and memory exercises to help her brain relearn and straighten memory processes.
Her parents were relieved, hoping that one day she would remember her past.
