Here’s How You Can Determine The Sex Of Your Unborn Child.
Even more so, certain people have evident preferences when
they had birthed a sex and want the other, for instance a family of five girls
hoping to have a boy, or a family of six boys looking forward to having a girl.
However with changes in times and seasons, there has been
changes in mindsets as knowledge disbursed has been constantly updated due to presence
of new information.
From Women being only a soil for which the Man seed to grow,
to being the determinant of the child’s sex to having no say on the child’s
sex, Science and People have had a lot to say on the idea of, ‘Who Determines
the Child’s Sex?’.
In this article however, we will be discussing, how _ if it is possible _ to determine the sex of a child by natural fertilization.
SHETTLES METHOD
The Shettles method uses the method and timing, positioning of
sexual intercourse including pH of body fluids to influence the sex of the
conceived foetus.
The Shettles method is named after the one who theorized the
method, Landrum Shettles, a physician who lived in the United States in the
1960s.
It is known now thanks to increase in science knowledge that
the sex of a foetus is determined by the sperm that fertilizes the egg cell.
The female egg cell has only the X chromosome, while amongst
the millions of ejaculate of sperm cells are both X and Y chromosomes.
Fertilization of the X-egg cell by a X-sperm cell will
result in a female foetus of XX chromosome. Fertilization of the X-egg cell by a
Y-sperm cell will result in a male foetus of the XY chromosome.
Shettles studied the Sperm cells and found recognizable
differences between the Y-sperm cell and the X-sperm cell.
The Y-sperm cell responsible for the conception of a male foetus
was seen to be lighter, possessing round heads smaller and faster than the
X-sperm cell.
The X-sperm cell responsible for the conception of the
female foetus was seen to be heavier, possessing oval heads and larger than the
Y-sperm cells.
Shettles went further to study men who had fathered only
female or male children. In cases, where they had only female children,
Shettles discovered that these men had more amount of X-sperm cells and the
vice versa in the opposite situation.
Trying For A Boy Using The SHETTLES Method
· Timing: Shettles advise the timing of sexual
intercourse to be between the menstrual phase and ovulation phase. Sexual
intercourse should be done often as close to the ovulation period.

Positioning: The position suited here is one
that allows the sperm to be deposited as close as possible to the cervix. This
is because the vaginal tract secretes fluids acidic to the alkaline nature of
the sperm.
· Method: It is encouraged for the women to orgasm first before release of sperms. Shettles idea says that her orgasmic secretions are alkaline and may assist the sperm in traveling towards the egg.
Trying For A Girl Using The SHETTLES Methos
When trying for a girl, Shettles
advise the opposite of the process of trying for a boy.
Sperm deposition close to the entrance is said to favour X-sperm cell. Shettles believed that the X-sperm cell thrived in acidic environments unlike it’s male counterpart, hence sexual intercourse is advised to occur 2-4 days before ovulation.
Is The SHETTLES Method Scientifically Proven?
Despite people coming up to attest
to the fact that the Shettles method worked for them, there is no scientific
evidence as to whether the Shettles method is accurate as the results range
from below 50% to above 50%.
One sure way to determine the sex
of a child is by In-vitro fertilization or pre-implantation genetic diagnosis
(PGDs) where embryo of the suited sex are returned or inseminated into the
uterus.
However in countries like the
United Kingdom and Nigeria, such is illegal and there is limited allowance to
perform such, except in the avenue of a genetic defect affecting a sex such as the
Turner syndrome in females and Duchene Muscular Dystrophy in males.
